A case study of ship track formation in a polluted marine boundary layer OMA
Noone, K.J.; Johnson, D.W.; Taylor, J.P.; Ferek, R.J.; Garrett, T.; Hobbs, P.V.; Durkee, P.A.; Nielsen, K.; Öström, E.; O'Dowd, C.; Smith, M.H.; Russell, L.M.; Flagan, R.C.; Seinfeld, J.H.; De Bock, L.; Van Grieken, R.; Hudson, J.G.; Brooks, I.; Gasparovic, R.F.; Pockalny, R.A..
A case study of the effects of ship emissions on the microphysical, radiative, and chemical properties of polluted marine boundary layer clouds is presented. Two ship tracks are discussed in detail. In situ measurements of cloud drop size distributions, liquid water content, and cloud radiative properties, as well as aerosol size distributions (outside-cloud, interstitial, and cloud droplet residual particles) and aerosol chemistry, are presented. These are related to remotely sensed measurements of cloud radiative properties. The authors examine the processes behind ship track formation in a polluted marine boundary layer as an example of the effects of anthropogenic particulate pollution on the albedo of marine stratiform clouds.

A proposed ecosystem-based management system for marine waters: linking the theory of environmental policy to the practice of environmental management Ecology and Society
O'Higgins, Tim; Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), Scottish Marine Institute, Scotland; Tim.O'Higgins@sams.ac.uk; Cormier, Roland; Gulf Fisheries Centre, Fisheries and Oceans Canada; Roland.Cormier@dfo-mpo.gc.ca; Diedrich, Amy; School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, James Cook University, Australia; amy.diedrich@jcu.edu.au.
New coastal and marine management strategies have recently been developed in many countries and regions. From an ecosystem approach perspective, the aim of such strategies is the maintenance of ecosystem integrity while enabling the sustainable use of ecosystem goods and services. There is, however, a need for harmonized definitions and standardized processes to deal not only with the interjurisdictional and multidisciplinary complexities that are associated with such strategies but also with the extensive timelines and resources implicated in the planning and implementation of these strategies. The ecosystem-based management system proposed here is based on three pillars that facilitate the integration of an ecosystem approach to coastal and oceans policy...

Hernández, Y.; Laguna, A.; Fernández, M.D.; Valdés, O.; Regalado, E.L..

Perrotta, R.G.; Ruarte, C.O..
The stripped weakfish (Cynoscion guatucupa) caught in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina (SW Atlantic) has a wide latitudinal distribution (22° S-43° S). In Argentina there are two main fishing areas, the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone and 'El Rincón', southern zone of the Buenos Aires littoral. The importance of the species makes it necessary to define an annual abundance index that would allow to diagnose the state of the stock. The model adjusted to calculate the index is the General Linear Model. The factors used were Year, Quarter, Length, Stratum (4 categories) and sub-areas (5 categories), all statistically significant. The problem generated by the presence in the model of first order interactions that include the Year factor is discussed. The...

Assessment of Land-based Sources and Activities. Affecting the Marine Environment OceanDocs
The Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (Figure 1.1) constitute a unique ecosystem with high biological diversity. Their natural resources provide a substantial economic support for the region: in addition to the fishery industry, which has ensured food security to many people of the region and created jobs for others, tourism is an ever growing and increasingly important industry for commerce and other economic activities. Hence, the marine environment should be well protected from the adverse impacts of pollution to ensure the sustainable use of its resources and good health of its users. Continuous degradation of the marine environment poses a threat to public health through the contamination of seafood, direct contact and digestion of polluted water. Damage to...

Chemical analysis of some macrophytes in Mariut and Edku lakes, Egypt OceanDocs
El-Sarraf, W.M..
Results of the investigation carried out in Lakes Mariut and Edku revealed that the trace metals concentrations in ceratophyllum demersum is relatively higher than that in Potamogeton pectinatus. The protein and trace metals in macrophytes collected from unpolluted areas is lower thjan that form polluted ones. Eichhornia crassipes can have a restricted role for the treatment of lake water. In Lake Edku, the results of chemical composition of sediments agree with the previous studies. The trace metal content of C. demersum was higher than that of P. pectinatus. The higher organic carbon level was recorded in stems of submerged plants and in leaves of floating ones. On the other hand, the high concentration of trace metal was observed in leaves of submerged...

Climatic trends in continental shelf waters off Ghana and in the Gulf of Guinea, 1963-1992 ArchiMer
Koranteng, Ka; Mcglade, Jm.
Using time series analyses, some physical parameters of the continental shelf waters of the Gulf of Guinea were examined. Analysis of coastal sea surface temperatures from Ghana and Ivory Coast, and offshore sea surface temperatures from the Gulf of Guinea clearly shows spatial and inter-annual patterns of cooling in coastal waters of West Africa. The behaviour of the decomposed trend of coastal and offshore sea surface temperatures, sub-surface: temperature measured at 100 m depth off Ghana and salinity showed that the observational period (1963-1992) could be divided into three climatic periods: the period before 1972, from 1972 to 1982, and the period after 1982. In the first period, sea surface temperature at both coastal and offshore areas and bottom...

The reading of otoliths sagittae collected during the INIDEP (National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development, Argentina) assessment cruises carried out in the 1993-2003 period allowed to estimate length and weight growth parameters and the condition factor of hake (Merluccius hubbsi) and to prospect the two management units of the species north and south of 41ºS (Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic). A great variability in total length and weight in each age group was observed; nevertheless, stable mean length and weight values per age group were observed in the period analyzed. Besides, the values estimated to determine possible growth variations in each and between both management units north and south of 41ºS were compared. The comparison of growth...
